Happiness seems to be one of those subjects that has always been intriguing to my readers and me. It is that elusive thought or feeling that we have in our mind. Some people define happiness as a place, such as Florida or a nice warm climate fishing village on the Mediterranean sea. We have this perfect thought in our minds that helps us get through the day-to-day. For others, happiness is a specific time in the future. Some people look forward to the day when they no longer have to do X,Y, and Z. Or they look forward to the day when they will be retired.

This concept of retirement is interesting. I define retirement as a state of financial freedom that comes from achieving financial mastery. I think retirement has nothing to do with age or a date somewhere out in the future. Nor does it have anything to do with happiness.

Can retirement equal happiness? Absolutely, my guess is there are a lot of retired people who are very happy. However, I suspect that feeling of happiness came long before retirement. In some respects happiness is just a choice that we make or don’t make everyday. This is a learned skill that for happy people it just becomes a daily habit. Similar to brushing ones teeth. This is a daily choice driven by gratitude. Having a gratitude mind set is what turns the daily choice of happiness into a life long habit.

Careful of the missing tile syndrome.

We all have the missing tile syndrome. What’s the missing tile syndrome? Let’s say that you were on vacation in Europe and you walked into the gorgeous church or historic building. As you looked up you noticed a ceiling that was immaculately decorated with a gorgeous mosaic tile. The tile ceiling is of the greatest detail and with most vibrant colors you have ever seen. Now let’s say that in the middle of this tile ceiling one of the tiles was missing. Now despite how gorgeous this art work is, what is the first thing that you notice when you look up at the ceiling? Yep, that’s right you notice the missing tile.

Easily explained, practicing gratitude is about focusing what we have in life and not on what we don’t have. This is an exercise that we need to practice everyday and is not easy for anyone.

Making the choice to be an entrepreneur is the first step towards choosing happiness in your life.

For a passionate entrepreneur like myself  happiness comes from building businesses. I love to build businesses. I love the challenge, the risk, the reward, the chase, the highs, and the lows. I love learning about building different businesses. I love understanding how to create something out of nothing. How to build something from the ground up and then hire someone more qualified than me to run it. I love providing value, a service, or a product to the community. I love helping others. I love knowing that I am in complete control. That I truly own my successes and my failures. That there is no one in my way.  There is no one who I can blame for situations that make me unhappy.

As a business owner, your happiness is directly related to how many people you help. It’s not that date off in the future when you will be “retired.” Want more happiness? Than start by helping others to find their happiness first. Like the quote above…

In my personal quest to unravel the “happiness equation” I recieved this feedback from a reader of this blog. I had posted an article about happiness on one of my LinkedIn groups. I recieved a few comments and one of comments was:

Barriers to success are easy to overcome, but only when you know they’re there.

Why do some people achieve their goals while others fail? I believe it’s because successful people manage to overcome five barriers that, in many cases, guarantee failure. Here are those barriers and how to overcome them:

1. Uninspiring Goals

When most people set goals, they envision a “thing,” such as a particular amount of money, an object (like a new car), or a specific achievement (like writing a book). Unfortunately, these “things I’m gonna get or do” goals don’t appeal to the core of what motivates you, because they miss the point that what you’re actually seeking in life and work is the POSITIVE EMOTIONS that you believe those things will produce.

Fix: Rather than envisioning a “thing” as your goal, envision–with all the strength in your imagination–how you will feel when you achieve the goal. That way, you’ll be inspired to do whatever it takes (within legal and ethical bounds) to achieve that goal.

2. Fear of Failure

If you’re afraid of failing, you won’t take the necessary risks required to achieve your goal. For example

It’s easy to create mental barriers between “friends” and “business.” But there are ways to nurture business relationships with friends–without jeopardizing either. Here are three things to be mindful of to make sure both sides are happy.

1. Seek the win-win.

Put yourself in the shoes of your friend and seek out ideas for how you might be able to solve his or her problems. The stakes don’t have to be particularly high early on; the key is to find a way that you can both benefit from an initial business interaction. A quick win can be something as simple as sharing connections or finding similar challenges that you can problem-solve together. For starters this book ranks #64 as an all-time best seller on It also ranks #1 on amazon under the category of time management. Not only is this book a Service Coach best seller,  it’s a best seller period.

Stephen Covey first talks about the difference between character ethics and personality ethics. Prior to WWI most of the literature was based on character ethics as a foundation for success. Things like integrity, humility, fidelity, temperance, courage, justice, patience, industry, simplicity, modesty, and the Golden rule. These were the basic principles of effective living, and that people can only experience true success and enduring happiness as they learn and integrate these principles into their basic character.

Shortly after WWII the idea of  success shifted from character ethics to personality ethics. Success become more of a function of personality, of public image, of attitudes and behaviors, skills, and techniques. Success became a symbol without substance. It’s the “get rich quick” scheme promising “wealth without work.” We look for shortcuts, expecting to be able to skip these vital steps in order to save time and effort and still reap the desired result.

Seven habits of highly effective people is about a new line of thinking. It’s principle-centered, and character-based approach to personal and interpersonal effectiveness. Steven Discusses how this done with an “inside out” method of change. “Inside out” means to start with self; to start with most “inside” part of self -with your motives, principles, and your character.

The “inside out” process is a continuing process of renewal based on the natural laws that govern human growth and progress. It’s an upward spiral of growth that leads to progressively higher forms of responsible independence and effective interdependence.

We often get distracted as business owners. Focusing on anything from our equipment, to our AP, to our AR, and back to our operations. Putting out fires and solving problems everywhere we go seems more like our role than making money. At the end of the day your head is just spinning from all the “Doing” that occurred in the day.
